I’d like to introduce you to, Jake Wolf, the owner and executive chef of Capital Club 16. He rips on a skateboard, he’s a family man, a successful business owner, an artisan of food, one of the building blocks of the growing downtown area, and just a really cool cat.
Capital Club 16 is located at 16 West Martin Street in Downtown Raleigh. It not only has amazing food, it’s a great late night spot to grab a drink, as well as catch good DJ’s playing anything from Funk, Soul, New Wave, and even Hip Hop.
This past week my right hand man Joe Bruno and myself headed down to Capital Club to grab a bite. We were thinking about just doing a light snack, but ended up eating so much they basically had to roll us out the door. I personally had to start with my Bavarian favorite!!! The one thing I had more than anything else while I travelled to Munich this past year. “Excuse me, can I please have a large Hofbrau.” Capital Club is the only spot in North Carolina to carry this special beer. When you look up beer in the dictionary there most likely is a picture of this one.
After one of those it was time to order some food. We started with the Pimento Cheese and Fig Crostini served on sourdough with a Dutch Kettle apple jam……….Unreal!!!! I could order this everyday and never get sick of it.
Next up was the Currywurst, which is a personal favorite of mine.
Currywurst is an Original Berliner Street Fare which consists of sliced bratwurst served with a curry sauce and fries. This is as German as it gets, its what you eat after the bars, and it’s delicious and inexpensive. Don’t think twice about ordering it, you will not be disappointed.
Jake then sent us out one of his favorites, another appetizer, the Beef Brisket Horseradish Minis. I’m not going to say anymore because this is really one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. There are three or 4 sandwiches that are on my list of the best ever. This is one of them hands down.
At this point we are stuffed full of apps, cold German beers and we haven’t even had our entrees. I also heard it through the grapevine about a so called master of desserts who works here. Can I skip dinner and have this first!! OK, OK we will wait Carrie. For entrees, I went for the Butchers Plate, which is a Mixed grill Schaller & Weber artisanal sausages served with spaetzle, braised kraut, and house mustards. What makes this dish so special is the Butchers. The sausages are made by Sixth generation NYC German Butchers. This is as real as real gets. If you’ve ever lived where butchers and frequenting the butcher shop for meats is still prevalent its a real cultural experience.
Joe Bruno decided to order off the Thursday Night Specials menu and fired away at the Pressed Duck and Andouille Sausage Sandwich. This sandwich was paired with honey mustard, white cheddar, arugula, chow chow and a side of the infamous Shanny Fries. I’m really hoping they add this to the normal menu because it was one of those I would drive far and wide to get my hands (and mouth) on. And last but certainly not least, dessert. Even though we were stuffed , Jake made dessert mandatory. And I’m not complaining in the least.
She’s stunning, witty, sharp, from the north and really, really good at making deserts that leave you asking for more. Everyone, Please say hello to Carrie Gephart.
DRUMROLL…….The Banana Split Tart which consists of a ganache tart with caramelized bananas and waffle cone crust served with wet nuts and ice cream. Let’s just say I can finally die a happy man. It’s the desserts dessert, the one you can have for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
So to conclude on all this deliciousness, do yourself a favor and make your way to this gem of a spot Capital Club 16. The staff is friendly, the food is amazing, the beer flows like water, the music is genuine, the laughs never stop and this spot is seriously on point. **** sidenote They have amazing vegetarian specials and a brunch that smothers the rest.
Hats off to you JAKE you are the man!
